Walking In Total Harmony
Ask any dog owner, “what activities do you share with your dog?,” and one of the answers you are sure to hear is walking. For the majority of folks sharing their lives with dogs, walking is the most common source of exercise and stimulation in their dog’s life.
And yet, comfortable, connected and cooperative loose-leash walking can actually be a rather complex and often challenging activity to master for both you and your dog. Pulling? Balking? Difficulty connecting and listening? The world is full of exciting distractions and curious attractions, tempting your dog to investigate or to react in a doggy fashion that may not be compatible with his human’s vision of the perfect walk.
You will learn how to turn loose-leash walking struggles into strengths, developing skills and concepts that boost your relationship as you transform walking the dog into walking WITH – Walking in (Total) Harmony! Using dog-friendly, positive reinforcement-based games, techniques and strategies you and your dog will enhance your sense of joyful teamwork without jerks, pops or other aversive techniques that can damage your relationship.
NOTE: This class is designed to help dogs and their owners develop happy walking habits. Dogs who have been struggling with a pattern of on-leash reactivity may not be appropriate for this class. Ask about our Reactive to Reliable series or set up a private consultation with one of Great Dog’s trainers to assess and address the best way to help you and your dog overcome this common and uncomfortable behavior.
- Standard 6 ‘ leash, leather or fabric only (Please NO: retractable leashes, slip leads, prong collars, choke chains or chain leashes)
- Front Clip Body Harness (recommended)
- Easy access food reward pouch
- Food rewards (high value, small pieces)
Tips for Success: We will be using food rewards throughout class, so we recommend either feeding your dog less before class or, if your dog loves his food, bring your dog’s dinner to use in class. Dog’s who are “free fed” (food always available in bowl) may not find their regular food motivating or rewarding, so high quality treats or raw/dehydrated/air dried “kibble” would be a great choice (e.g. Real Meat, Ziwi Peaks, etc.)
Three 1-hour sessions
