Great Dog Obedience - Miriam Rose

Who is our Private Lesson Trainer?

Miriam Rose brings to Great Dog a lifetime passion for dogs, a belief in positive training methods and years of specialized training. Miriam trains and handles contraband detection dogs. In addition, she is contracted to work two explosives detection dogs on various docks in Seattle. She also has her own Giant Schnauzer who is a drug and weapons detection dog, which she works around the United States in schools, businesses, and private homes.

Miriam’s life story has revolved around dogs since childhood. She trained her first dog, a German Shepherd, in obedience when she was ten years old. After that she went on to own and train other German Shepherds, and later Giant Schnauzers, in obedience, agility, tracking, herding, and now in drug and explosives scent detection. She maintains an extensive knowledge base on the topics of dog training and care.   Also, Miriam frequently attends various law enforcement K-9 training seminars and Schutzhund seminars around the US with at least one of her working dogs. On a pro bono basis, she evaluates dogs for law enforcement and has helped place two dogs within various agencies this past year. One of them is already working as a drug dog in western WA, and the other is doing well in his training in WV.

She is a member of the Giant Schnauzer Club of America and served that organization as Information Center Director for two years. Presently she is the Vice President of the national breed club’s rescue organization, HTZ Giant Schnauzer Rescue, a 501(c)3. With their support she has retrained, rehabilitated, and re-homed numerous “problem” Giant Schnauzers here in the Pacific NW over the past seven years. She has two Giant Schnauzers of her own – Latch and Echo.

Although Miriam has worked for years as a respected member of the "doggy dog" world of law enforcement, she is a confirmed believer in using positive methodology to gain interaction, trust and insight.  All of our dogs are trained using positive reinforcement skills and encourage the owners to participate in the learning curve with the pooch!

What qualifications does Miriam possess?

Since the autumn of 2000 Miriam has owned and operated Verity Services, which provides contraband detection dog services to schools, businesses, and private homes across the United States.

MIriam also works as a contractor to AMDETECH, Inc. handling two of their explosives detection dogs. They work together at the Port of Seattle searching all ships’ stores for Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) between May and September. Every Saturday and Sunday Ollie, Mika, and Miriam sweep between 200 and 300 pallets of goods per ship before they are loaded on the NCL “Star” and the NCL “Spirit.” Last summer they searched nearly 7,000 pallets together.

What is our philosophy of training?
The extensive training resume that Miriam brings to Great Dog allows us to offer specialized training using an interdisciplinary approach fit to the needs of both canines and their human counterparts. Over many years of experience Miriam has successfully handled all breeds of dogs with firm kindness and consistency. Miriam is adept at using her keen knowledge of canine behavior and applying it to dogs with challenging and inappropriate behaviors. Miriam uses positive training methodology including leadership development and clicker training. She is especially interested in helping people who have selected working breeds as pets learn how to manage and enrich their dogs lives in addition to private lessons on site at Great Dog Miriam is also able to accommodate private training in your own home. She will also be teaching several specialty classes at Great Dog as her schedule allows.
